Indian equity markets maintained their upward momentum due to positive global market cues, sustained buying by the FIIs, and sliding oil prices. A healthy buying was observed in blue chip stocks like M&M, ICICI Bank, and Bharti Airtel. The market sentiments were up upbeat as International Monetary Fundβs (IMF) Managing Director Kristalina Georgieva said that despite global uncertainty and headwinds, India continues to be a bright spot in the global economy.
The market sentiments got further support due to the appreciation of the domestic currency. Auto sectors were trading higher as the Federation of Automobile Dealers Associations (FADA) data stated that the retail sales of automobiles in India grew 8.31 percent in August this year.
On the global front, the other Asian markets finished mostly higher on Thursday, tracking the positive cues from US markets. The weak economic data released in China signaled more pressure on the second largest economy in the world. European key market indexes are trading mostly in the green tracking the positive cues from the global markets
Nifty and Sensex at the close today
The Nifty50 index was up by 174.35 points or 0.99 percent and closed at 17798.75 levels while the Sensex gained by 659.31 points or 1.12 percent and finished at 59688.22 levels. The Bank Nifty index ended higher today by 753.05 points or 1.91 percent on the spot level and ended at 40208.95
The broader markets underperformed the front line indexes today, the Nifty midcap index was up by 57.50 points or 0.18 percent and closed at 31923.05 levels. The Nifty smallcap index closed higher today by 94.10 points or 0.96 percent at 9930.30 levels.

The top gainers in the Nifty50 Stocks were Shree Cements, BPCL, Axis Bank, Tech Mahindra, and ICICI Bank and the top losers were Hindalco, Tata Steel, SBI Life insurance, Coal India, and Tata Motors
The midcap top gainers were City Union Bank, ICICI Securities, and Bank of Baroda and the top losers were Dhani Services, Endurance Tech, and CESC
The top gainers in the Nifty smallcap index were JK Lakshmi Cement, Indian Bank, and Sonata and the top losers were BEML, Vakrangee, and Wockhardt The most active stocks in the Nifty index in terms of value were ICICI Bank, Axis Bank, and Shree Cement The most active stocks in terms of volume were Tata Steel, Tata Motors, and ONGC
On the sectoral front, PSU Bank, Banking, Financial Services, IT, and Auto were closed in the green today. The sectors that closed in the red were Metals, Media, Pharma, and Consumer Durables
